Or more specifically the National Trust is embarking on a survey of ancient organisms.
As many as 40,000 ancient trees are to be inspected.
I really get a good deal of enjoyment from the existence of trees and have a variety of favourite trees dotted about the landscape. They are friends visited year in an year out.
Some have died or been removed over the years and I miss the presence.
There is a permanence associated with trees and I never expect them to leave this mortal coil before I do. When it does occur, there is a sense of dislocation within that landscape. It means within my remaining lifetime there is not going to be a tree of such majesty in that spot again. Chances are there will not be a tree of any kind in that spot again if it is in an urban setting.
